Prophet Isaiah in Isa 28:11 said that God will speak to His people “with stammering lips and another tongue” in order to help them to gain knowledge and understand doctrine. The word stammering means foreign as Isaiah confirmed in chapter 33:19.

Paul repeated this prophecy when he said “in the law it is written, with men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people” (1Cr 14:21). The word tongues refer to foreign languages. He teaching the believers about speaking in tongues when they assembled together to worship.

There are some truths about tongues that we need to learn:

a. there are tongues or languages of men and languages of angels (1 Cor 13: 1). Angels speak in languages that are not generally known to humans except by revelation.

b. Paul taught us two important truths about tongues in 1 Cor 14. First, people who speak in tongues can speak in the languages of angels. He or she speaks mysteries to God with his/her spirit (1 Cor 14: 2). This would answer to Isaiah’s prophecy that God wants to teach humans knowledge and deep truths.

People can also speak in human languages that are unknown to them so that the secrets of the heart of the hearers will be revealed, causing them to glorify God. This happened on the Day of Pentecost when the disciples received the infilling with the Holy Spirit. They preached the gospel to the hearers who had come from other nations to worship God. These hearers were so amazed that these unlearned men and women were able to talk in their languages.

Tongues of angels/men of stammering lips

Angel speaks our language when they come to earth to give us instruction, direction or to instruct us on doctrine. We must remember that the angel comes originally from a place where the language is not familiar to earth, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy that God speaks to us through men of foreign languages.

Paul said that when we pray in tongues of angels/heavenly languages, we are really praying with our spirits and are receiving mysteries from God. What really goes on in the realm of the spirit? Are we sitting and talking with God, with angels? Ezekiel, Daniel and John the beloved spoke with angels when they were in the realm of the spirit. Did they speak in and understand the language of heaven?

NB: Jesus Himself  quoted this prophecy, but I cannot find the verse. If I recall correctly, He was chiding the Pharisees about their unbelief in His word. Did He mean that He was from a land where He spoke a language foreign to them? I will search diligently to find this text. Blessings!
